This volume presents a collection of essays devoted to the analysis of scientific change and stability. It explores the balance and tension that exist between commensurability and continuity on the one hand and incommensurability and discontinuity on the other. The book constitutes fully revised versions of papers that were originally presented at an international colloquium held at the University of Nancy, France, in June 2004.

Few philosophers of science have influenced as many readers as Thomas S. Kuhn. Yet no comprehensive study of his ideas has existed—until now. In this volume, Paul Hoyningen-Huene examines Kuhn's work over four decades, from the days before The Structure of Scientific Revolutions to the present, and puts Kuhn's philosophical development in a historical framework. Scholars from disciplines as diverse as political science and art history have offered widely differing interpretations of Kuhn's ideas, appropriating his notions of ...

This paper deals with the following questions: What features of modern natural science are responsible for the fact that, of all forms of science, this form is technologically exploitable? The three notions: concept of nature, epistemic ideal, and experiment, suggest the most important components of my answer. I will argue, first, that only the peculiar interplay of the modern concept of nature with an epistemic ideal attuned to it can cast experiment in the specific, highly central role it plays in the pursuit of knowledge about nature. It will then become clear that the form of science in which experiment plays such a role will, necessarily, prove technologically exploitable.

It is well-known that Wittgenstein argued that games have no properties in common that could be used to construct an explicit definition of “game” in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions for its application. In fact, Wittgenstein’s arguments concern the notion of Spiel and not the notion of game. In this note, I want to argue against Wittgenstein’s thesis mainly by presenting an explicit definition of Spiel.

In this paper, I will show that the Miracle Argument is unsound if one assumes a certain form of transient underdetermination. For this aim, I will first discuss and formalize several variants of underdetermination, especially that of transient underdetermination, by means of measure theory. I will then formalize a popular and persuasive form of the Miracle Argument that is based on “use novelty”. I will then proceed to the proof that the miracle argument is unsound by means of a mathematical example. Finally, I will expose two hidden presuppositions of the Miracle Argument that make it so immensely though deceptively persuasive.

As I am not a specialist in the subject matter of Holger Lyre's paper, 1 I had to learn from him that there are two different approaches to structural realism in the literature, the “Worrall-type” and the “French-Ladyman-type” approach, as he calls them. 2 The Worrall-type approach is a reaction to the difficulties that emerged in the defence of entity realism against various objections, especially against the well-known pessimistic meta-induction. 3 In contrast, the French-Ladyman-type approach tries “to present arguments from the ...

The title of this paper indicates that it deals with work in progress. First of all, I will have to explain what I mean by a theory of antireductionist arguments. Having done this I will present some preliminary results concerning this theory. In the initial section, I shall try to awaken the need for a theory of antireductionist arguments. In the second section, I will discuss the type of theory which could be meant, and how we could obtain such a theory. This will explain why case studies of a certain kind are needed. In the third section, I will ...

I will first deal with all forms of convergent realism. I will then turn to the variety of realisms that do not explicitly claim some sort of convergence but exploit some kind of stability in a sequence of theories; this includes structural realism. Convergent realism is a doctrine (or rather a family of doctrines) that roughly states that we are fairly safe to accept the following three propositions (compare, eg, Sankey (2004)):

In a series of papers, Robert Sugden has analyzed the epistemic role of theoretical models in economics. In order to prepare the ground for his own view, he convincingly criticized several ways that were proposed in the literature as attempts at an understanding of the epistemic role of economic models. His own view is that theoretical models in economics describe a counterfactual world that is separated from the real world by a gap. This gap has to be filled if the model should have an epistemic function for our understanding of the real world.

The paper claims that Friedman’s famous 1953 essay “On the methodology of positive economics” (F53) has been seriously misread in the past. I first show that there are several statements in F53 that are not compatible with any of the usual readings of F53. However, an alternative reading of F53 can be achieved if one takes seriously Friedman’s reference to ideal types in Sect. V of F53. Friedman was familiar with Max Weber, who introduced ideal types, through Frank Knight, who was his teacher at Chicago. Given that in F53’s view ideal types are a fundamental building block of economic theory, it becomes clear why both an instrumentalist and a directly realist reading of F53 are inadequate. Furthermore, the reading of F53 in terms of ideal types makes it intelligible why F53 so emphatically introduces elements from Popper’s falsificationist methodology: they are essential because the speculative element introduced by ideal types must be severely restrained by empirical control. Finally, I demonstrate that most of the strange passages of F53 make very good sense under the new interpretation.

Neither Karl Popper, nor Frank Knight, nor Max Weber are cited or mentioned in Friedman's famous 1953 essay " On the methodology of positive economics " (F53). However, they play a crucial role in F53. Making their contribution explicit suggests that F53 has been seriously misread in the past. I will first show that there are several irritating statements in F53 that are, taken together, not compatible with any of the usual readings of F53. Second , I show that an alternative reading of F53 can be achieved if one takes seriously Friedman's reference to ideal types; " ideal type " is a technical term introduced by Max Weber. Friedman was familiar with Max Weber's work through Frank Knight, who was his teacher in Chicago. Given that in F53's view ideal types are fundamental building blocks of economic theory, it becomes clear why both instrumentalist and realist readings of F53 are inadequate. Third, the reading of F53 in terms of ideal types gives the role of elements from Popper's falsifica-tionist methodology in F53 a somewhat different twist. Finally, I show that the irritating passages of F53 make good sense under the new reading, including the infamous " the more significant the theory, the more unrealistic the assumptions " .
